It’s that time of year again! It doesn’t seem like 365 days since we last reviewed a St Patrick’s Day inspired online slot but it comes around quicker the older you get – and Stan is feeling his age these days! And guess what? The theme of this “Irish” celebration is Leprechauns! These guys are nothing if not original. These guys in this case are Microgaming and they bring us Lucky Leprechaun, the game you will play once around March 17th and then for the rest of year (or not). If you are detecting a tad bit of cynicism here – you’d be right. A cursory Google for Leprechaun based slot games will present you with a plethora of options. This game released just this week could easily be mistaken for any number of others it seems even with the same name from previous years. So it is hard to get too motivated for another but in the interest of subjective reporting let’s look at this one in isolation.

Gameplay

It’s a 5 reel 20 payliner featuring the symbols you would expect from the theme. You have the usual playing card denominations plus some predictable symbols as well as some pints of Guinness. The symbols you will be interested in primarily will be the “lucky” gold coin and the Bonus Pot of Gold, more of that to follow. The game is played with a little Irish folk soundtrack of fiddles and you are provided a running commentary at times by the Leprechaun voice over.

Wilds and Scatters

The Lucky Leprechaun is the Wild and as usual replaces any symbol necessary except Scatters to produce the highest possible winning combination. The Gold Coin is a scatter of sorts, but only appears on the 5th reel. Landing a single Gold Coin will activate free spins. The true Scatter symbol is the Pot of Gold and is the trigger for another bonus feature.

Bonus Games

Yes, Lucky Leprechaun features 2 separate Bonus games. The first is the Free Spins bonus entered as described above when a single coin scatter lands on the 5th reel. This will deliver five free spins with an initial 2x multiplier. During free spins, gold and green clovers can appear at random on the reels. Gold clovers grant additional multipliers, and green clovers deliver more free spins, while stacked wilds will land to help boost wins.

The second bonus feature is the Trail O’ Fortune which is triggered by three or more bonus Pot of Gold scatter symbols. Spin the bonus wheel to reveal a number and then hop along the multiplier trail, where the top prize 1000x multiplier (yes 1000x!!) is the target. If you are truly lucky a hidden emerald will award an extra spin and a rainbow bridge will provide a quick jump to a higher multiplier.

Summary

Taken in its own right, Lucky Leprechaun is a perfectly acceptable online slot. We think it is a slightly tired and predictable theme but the market is clearly there to be satisfied. The presentation is HD and thus sharp and the 2 bonus features provide a route to some potentially lucrative wins.
