In producing of a sequel to anything, be it a book, a movie or as in this case a slot game, the risk is always that you are taking something unbroken and trying to fix it. In design, do you stick with the tried and tested or do you stir the pot and potentially damage a winning product? In devising the follow up to the hugely successful Break Da Bank, Microgaming elected to for a bit of the both.
The Game
The look of the new game bears little resemblance to its predecessor. What you are presented with is a format more familiar in current online slot play, namely a five reel set as opposed to the retro 3 reel of the original game. But Microgaming have not gone in for a crazy number of paylines, where the old game offered 5, the new maintains a conservative 9. Whilst in this instance the entire screen is almost filled with the reels, leaving no room for the pay table that is so apparent in the original, we were pleased to find a clear button on the bottom left saying “View Pays,” which offers a full breakdown of the jackpots and bonuses available in the game. Betting ranges from just one penny to a top size of 50 cents, with a maximum coin limit set at 90. Game symbols have moved on from the most basic BARs to literal gold bars in the new game, alongside standard 10 trough Ace and other money related graphics. The “Break Da Bank Again” symbol is “wild,” which means it can be used in place of any symbol for the purposes of completing a winning combination. And it operates as a 5x multiplier on that winning payout. The safe or vault is your scatter and provider of free spins.
At first glance of the pay table you may be forgiven in thinking that the potential jackpot payout from this slot is less than its previous incarnation (the jackpot is advertised as only 1,500 coins). Clearly this would not make for many players idea of an improvement – but stay with us as the big money is in the free spins and multipliers feature.
Free Spins & Multipliers
Land 3 or more Vault symbols anywhere on the paylines and you will gain entry to the Free Spins Feature. Three Vault symbols will bring you 15 free spins, four 20 free spins, and five produces 25! During the “Free Spins” phase, all regular payout rules apply, but the Break Da Bank Again symbol (a wild) will produce a 25x multiplier when it is used to complete a winning combo. During this Free Spins Bonus Game, with the right stack of multipliers, the jackpot climbs all the way up to 375,000 coins!
Summary
Sequels generally divide opinion. Break Da Bank Again does offer a little more in terms of variance and volatility against the original game. There is a little, if not a lot more for players to get their teeth into within the newer game. Yet this reviewer feels that those who were enthusiastic for the simplicity of the original will likely not be tempted away by the changes made. New recruits and those with greater focus on the long game may prefer this incarnation. You takes your money you make your choice.
