Slot Terms

Free Slot Money thought it would be helpful to consolidate a complete glossary of slot terms to help slot players better understand all things slots.  Information is the key to winning and we want our community to receive big wins.

Slots Glossary of Terms

3D slots—slot games that make use of 3D technology. Most of the games are 2D, so they appear plainer. The deployment of 3D adds more depth to the graphics so they look and feel more realistic. A software company known as Sheriff Gaming has made 3D slot gaming more well-known. The slots can be played even without the 3D glasses.

Autoplay—also called autospin; a special feature found in many online slots or casinos, wherein players allow the system to run the reel and “match” symbols for them. The autoplay feature is often recommended for beginners. Players can also set how many times the autospin works. As long as the autoplay is on, the amount betted in every spin remains the same.

Basic Slots—slot machines that only have one payline.

Bet—the minimum or maximum amount of money you need to wager in order to make a spin. This is different from a coin size, which indicates the cost of every coin to make a spin.

Bonuses—the additional winnings a player can take depending on the patterns created. Not all slot machines have bonuses. Nevertheless, they can be wild, scatter, and feature bonus. A wild symbol bonus often substitutes any other logo or symbol in the reel so you can form more paylines. The scatter symbol is triggered when it lands in any part of the reel. Feature bonuses may be free spins, arcade-style games, or immediate release of rewards.

Carousel—a group of slots, usually with the same betting size.

Classic Slots—slot machines that fall into the standard design. Normally these are online slots that have three to five reels. Classic slots may also refer to some of the oldest slot games. These are the ones that have been adopted from their land-based counterparts.

Coin Size—the size of the coin that can be played in an online slot. This allows the player to bet in increments. Normally the minimum coin size is a penny while the highest is a nickel.

Free Spins—a slot machine play that is for free. It is one of the most common bonuses players can enjoy in online slots.

Hit—a win in any of the active paylines.

Maximum bet—the highest amount of money a player can bet in a single spin. It almost always allows him to play all the active paylines. This also guarantees him the highest jackpot and the potential of getting bonuses as well as wild and scatter symbols.

Mobile Slots—slots games that can be downloaded and/or played using a mobile device such as a phone or a tablet. The need for mobility among casino players eventually compelled slot software makers to create slots that can now be played using mobile devices. Not all online slots can be played via a tablet or a phone. Moreover, some slot games are mobile dedicated and can be played on Android, iOS, or PS3 devices.

Multiplier—a symbol that multiplies your winnings, depending on the symbol the player had played or the amount of the coin size being bet, among others. More often than not, the multiplier is triggered only once.

One Liner—one of the simplest slot machines. The game is composed of a lone reel with at least five sections. Players need to come up with at least 3 corresponding symbols to win the game.

Online slots—slot machine games that can be played online either on the desktop PC, mobile device, laptop or tablet. Not all slots can be converted for mobile gaming.

Paylines—the amount of lines that guarantee winning payouts. To view which lines are worth some money, refer to the pay table.

Pay table—a table that lists down the potential winning of a player according to the symbols he has created, the active paylines he played, and the total coins used for betting.

Payout Percentage—the difference between the house advantage and 100 percent. The higher the payout percentage, the better chances of winning. Thus, it also stands for how often the online casino or slot game pays the player (or the frequency of winning).

Progressive Jackpot—a kind of online slot game where jackpots not won are added to a centralized pot. Because several online slots may be connected to that pot, the jackpot prize can amount to millions of dollars. Some slot machines may be networked as well. This means that playing in any one of them guarantees a share in the prize.

Reels—these are the wheels in the slots. The reels are the ones that turn once you hit autoplay or pull the virtual crank down. Reels can be as small as three or as many as 15. All reels are made up of symbols, from which patterns determine your winnings.

Scatter Symbol—a symbol that can be found in any part of the reel or the active payline. A scatter symbol doesn’t have to be found in specific paylines or reel, but usually players need to come up with at least 3 of them among the reels. A scatter symbol may immediately pay players or trigger other bonuses such as Free Spins, multipliers, and featured games.

Symbols—logos or icons whose certain combinations are needed in order to win the jackpot or take advantage of the bonuses.

Video Slots—slot games that are accompanied or largely based on videos. The graphics or illustrations are more animated, and sounds are more distinct. Often, before the game starts, players are introduced to a short video on the overall theme or story of the game. The emergence of video slots further popularizes online casino gaming.

Wild Symbol—a symbol that can be used in lieu of a regular symbol. It can appear in any payline or reel, even if it’s not active or doesn’t have any payments when formed. A wild symbol, however, cannot substitute a scatter symbol, though it’s possible to get a wild and a scatter symbol at the same time. Like the scatter symbol, a wild symbol may lead to more bonuses such as Free Spins.
